News and Notes: Apocalyptic Noah film in the works?

What does the story of a giant ark, animals two-by-two and a dude named Noah have to do with environmental degradation and the apocalypse?

Both are in the description of a Daren Aronofsky project he has apparently envisioned since he was a teenager when he wrote a poem about the end of the world as seen through the eyes of Noah.

Slash Film (a great Web site by the way) has details on this epic-in-progress from an exclusive interview with the filmmaker who brought us Pi and Requiem For A Dream.

“It’s the end of the world and it’s the second most famous ship after the Titanic. So I’m not sure why any studio won’t want to make it,” Aronofsky told Slash Film. “I think it’s really timely because it’s about environmental apocalypse which is the biggest theme, for me, right now for what’s going on on this planet. So I think it’s got these big, big themes that connect with us. Noah was the first environmentalist. He’s a really interesting character. Hopefully they’ll let me make it.”

Something tells me, if it does get made, it will be a little deeper than Evan Almighty.
