Preview and pre-order new Saxon Shore

April 14, 2009

Saxon Shore’s It Doesn’t Matter is now available for pre-order from the band’s Web site – $15 postage paid. If you’d like to preview it before you hand over your credit card number, you can do so at the band’s Myspace page.

Here’s a description of the record from the Philadelphia-based band’s Web site:

We’ve spent the last few months working away on the new Saxon Shore album with producer Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Tapes n Tapes, Clap Your Hands). The album will be running about 55 minutes in length and also includes vocals on one of the tracks courtesy of Caroline. First time we’ve done that. Probably not the last. We are all very happy with the way everything turned out and we’re very excited to share this with everyone. Just figuring out the oh so important timing of it all…

We have a winner

April 7, 2009

Nothing like backing into a championship.

In a field where no one picked North Carolina to win it all, kingmatthew76 won even in defeat last night as he finished on top of the annual Tangzine.com Bracket-Breaker Challenge.

King Matthew, aka Matt Stone, finished with 577 points, but wasn’t exactly burning up the New York Times brackets. His top finish in our little challenge was good enough for 8,627 in the overall scheme of things.

Congratulations, King Matthew.

It’s only one game, but…

How cool was it to see the Pirates put up a four-spot in the ninth to win and CC “$161 million” Sabathia get lit up by the Orioles on Opening Day yesterday?

It might be the only day of a long 162-game season that the Pirates have more wins than the gold-plated to-hell-with-the-recession Yankees, but it’s still without a doubt a best-case scenario start to the season for Yankee haters everywhere.

Secret, Profane & Sugarcane

March 23, 2009

The grammar nazi in me cringed when I first heard the title (can sugarcane be used as an adjective?) but it became a little easier to hold in check once I discovered that “Secret, Profane & Sugarcane” was the name of a forthcoming “mostly acoustic” Elvis Costello record due out in June.

Stereogum has the 4-1-1.

Saved by the FNL 90210

March 17, 2009

Rumors are swirling that suggest diehard Friday Night Lights fans might not have to beg, plead and send light bulbs to NBC to keep the show on the air for two more seasons.

As much as I love this show and would like to see it continue, I too wonder what would happen with some of the main characters if it does survive as it did this year through a DirecTV/NBC partnership.

Will it get the 90210/Saved By the Bell treatment where characters inexplicably repeat grades and stretch the suspension of disbelief that they are young enough to be in high school even further?

Join our bracket-breaker

March 16, 2009

We have a group bracket again over at the New York Times Web site.

You can join it by clicking HERE.

As in previous years, the winner gets free music and bragging rights for a whole year like last year’s winner Kevin Wolf.

Dylan No. 46 announced

March 16, 2009

Bob Dylan’s 46th release was officially announced today by Columbia Records. Together Through Life, his first new studio album since Modern Times in 2006, will be released on April 28, according to a press release.

WBC Magic

March 10, 2009

WOW. Who said lightning doesn’t strike twice?

As a diehard Cubs fan, I hate that Carlos Marmol was the guy to blow it, but I’m officially sold on the World Baseball Classic now thanks to those crazy underdogs from The Netherlands. Incredible.

Glowing and wild-eyed

March 10, 2009

“In a music landscape often dominated by twenty-somethings and their casio beats, Dan Zimmerman descends from the mountain glowing and wild-eyed, the madman prophet singing molassed-gravel sonnets and with a burlap sack of rattlesnakes slung over his shoulder. A supreme joy and danger to listen to.”

-Michael Kaufman, of Asthmatic Kitty, talking about the forthcoming Dan Zimmerman record Cosmic Patriot, due out on Sounds Familyre April 21.

Sounds Familyre recently released another free mp3 from the album. You can check it out HERE. And if you haven’t already, download “Everyday In My Heart” by clicking HERE.
